Isaiah 58:11 — And the Lord will guide you continually…
A guide is someone who leads people through unknown or unfamiliar territory. Guides have experience leading the way for others and help them stay safe along the way. The Lord is the ultimate guide since there is no territory that is unknown or unfamiliar to Him. The Lord knows the right way to go, and He provides the best protection.
We face unfamiliar situations all the time. Something unexpected happens, something we have never experienced before, and we can feel lost. For me, that was when my father left this world to go to heaven. Loss is a very personal experience. People will lovingly console you, speak words of comfort, and try to help you as best as they can; but we need someone like Jesus to guide us through our grief.
Jesus died. He experienced death. Death is not unknown or unfamiliar territory for Him, so He is the best guide when we suffer the loss of a loved one. Jesus, whose birth we celebrate every December, was God incarnate — God in the flesh of His own human body. Jesus experienced what we as mortal human beings experience from birth to death, especially all the sad and painful things that trouble our body, soul, and spirit. Jesus is familiar with all we go through in this life, and He offers His continual guidance.
When Abraham put his faith in God, God led Abraham to the Promised Land. God made a miraculous star to lead the magi to Jesus. Have you ever prayed for God’s guidance? We all should. Instead of bumbling and stumbling through our lives like people without eyes or intelligence, we ought to rely on the Lord for His guidance. “Lead me, Lord, in Your way today. Keep me safe and bring me to Your expected end.” Amen.
