The Daily Blessings of Obedience

Deuteronomy 28:5 — Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

God promised to bless His people if they obeyed His voice and kept His commandments. God’s blessings would “overtake them” like a pursuer chases and catches someone running. In a sense, God said that those who listened to Him and obeyed Him would not be able to escape being blessed by Him.

Who would ever want to escape God’s blessings? One would think that the opposite would be true; a person would seek to obtain God’s blessings. Perhaps the Lord is trying to express how abundant the blessings of obeying God are.

Do you remember when there was a plague of frogs in Egypt during the time of Moses? There were frogs in the Egyptians’ beds, in their ovens, in their kneading bowls — everywhere! (Exodus 8:3). There was no way for the Egyptians to escape the frog plague.

God promised so much blessing that His obedient people would find blessings everywhere, even in their baskets and kneading bowls! God would bless them in their daily provisions and the ordinary circumstances of their lives, like the daily chore of making family meals.

The widow and her son who obeyed the word of the Lord spoken through Elijah saw their food supply never fail throughout the long famine. God provided for and blessed them by meeting their daily necessities. Never underestimate the blessings that will overtake you when you simply listen to God’s voice and obey the plain commandments of Scripture.
