Heavenly Citizenship

Today’s Reading: Philippians 3:20-21

Revelation 22:4 — They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.

God promises heavenly citizenship. Paul writes that our citizenship has already been changed and that we are citizens of heaven. We may be residing temporarily here on earth, but one day we will go home and see our King’s face and be transformed.

When Jesus rose from the dead, He had a new, glorified physical body that could do things that these bodies made from the dust of the earth cannot do. For one thing, Jesus was able to ascend to heaven in His new body. But for us to go to heaven, we have to die and leave our bodies behind, since these temporal bodies are incompatible with life in heaven.

Our bodies are made from the dust, the elements, of the earth, and they have been contaminated with sin. Adam’s sin is passed down from generation to generation and we are conceived in sin and born sinners. Nobody has to teach us how to sin; sin is instinctual for us. But heaven is a perfect, holy, sinless environment.

Our new heavenly home awaits us, a pristine, glorious, holy land of beauty, joy, and peace that exceeds our imaginations. There is no place for sin there, not even one speck of it, and that is part of what makes heaven so heavenly. Every citizen of heaven will be absolutely sinless and loving every moment of eternal life.

That is why we are told not to live like sinners, as if we belong to this world. We are in this world, but we are not to be worldly and live in the old sin nature we were born with. By God’s grace, through faith in Jesus with the Holy Spirit inside us, we are to live in the new, sinless nature given to us by God when we were born again.

O, Lord, please help us to live like citizens of heaven in this present darkness. Let us always see the light of Your face as we look to You and rely on You for our everyday lives. Amen.
