Father Knows Best

Proverbs 3:23 — Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.

It is not pleasant to stumble and fall, especially when you get hurt as a result. We can be injured when we are not walking in wisdom and discretion.

The Hebrew words for wisdom and discretion used in Proverbs 3:21 are tushiyyah and mezimmah. Both wisdom and discretion are associated with righteousness and the fear of the Lord. One way to think about the fear of the Lord is this: “Father knows best.” God the Father not only knows all (omniscience), but also knows exactly what is best for us.

When we trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, we are acknowledging that our Father knows best. He has the practical everyday wisdom (tushiyyah) that we should apply to our lives. He has the perfect way (mezimmah) for us to follow.

When we receive God’s insight and intentions through His Word and the Holy Spirit and trust that what He is telling us is best for us, we walk securely and we are not stumbling in our own misguided thoughts and ways.

God promises to give us the wisdom and discretion we need to make the best decisions if we will simply ask Him for it (James 1:5). God will never withhold His wisdom from you. James says that God will give wisdom generously when we request it by faith. So ask! Your Father knows best, so ask!
